When you're inside a brewery for the first time, it can be a thrilling experience but a little intimidating, too. There are a lot of styles, flavours, and brewing terms to choose from, so where do you start? If you come across terms such as "IPA," "pale ale," "stout," or "lager" on the menu, you may be unfamiliar with them.
The good news is that you don't need to be a craft beer expert to enjoy great beer.
We believe that at Triune Brew Co., craft beer is about connecting people, finding new tastes, and making special memories. Whether from local breweries, beer festivals, or making a new choice at the local store, this guide will help you make an informed choice in craft beer.
What Makes Craft Beer Different?
Craft beer is made by independent breweries that are committed to quality, creativity, and flavour. Rather than brewing on a large scale, craft brewers use different ingredients and brewing methods to produce beer with a personality all its own (Metych, 2026).
All beer begins with four basic components: water, malted barley, hops, and yeast. The ingredients are the same, but the recipe and/or the preparation process result in entirely different flavours, aromas, and colours. This is why one beer may be light and refreshing, whereas another has a rich, chocolate- or coffee-like flavour (Metych, 2026).
Variety is one of the top reasons people enjoy craft beer. It really has something for everyone!
Understanding the Most Popular Beer Styles
It's easier to select your first craft beer if you know a few common beer styles.
According to a beer guide published by Alex (2025), a few beer styles are as follows:
Lager
A lager is a great option to go with if you like light and refreshing beverages. Lagers are distinctively crisp, smooth, and easy to drink, and they are one of the most beginner-friendly beer styles.
Pale Ale
Pale ales are a blend of sweet, malty flavours and a subtle hoppy bitterness. These tend to be citrus, floral and are a good option for those who are not ready to be overwhelmed with bitter flavours.
India Pale Ale (IPA)
IPAs are known for their hoppy flavour. Citrus, tropical fruit, pine, or even floral flavours may be evident depending on the recipe. They tend to be quite bitter compared to other styles and are favourites among the more advanced craft beer connoisseurs.
Wheat Beer
Wheat beers are fresh, crisp, and faintly ripe. They are very smooth and light with citrus notes, so they're particularly pleasant in warmer weather or when paired with lighter foods.
Stout
Don't be fooled by the dark colour. Many stouts are surprisingly smooth and well-balanced, but the coffees, chocolates, caramels, and roasted malts are characteristic of the rich, complex flavour. Ideal for cool evenings or for dessert.
Finding a Beer That Matches Your Taste
If you're in the market for a new beer, it's time to find the match for your taste.
The simplest method to pick a craft beverage is to consider the flavours you already like.
If you prefer light and refreshing drinks, start with a lager or wheat beer. Pale Ale is a good option for those who prefer balanced flavours. IPA—If you want strong, lemony flavours, you'll be interested in an IPA. If you're a coffee or chocolate connoisseur, a stout could be your new favourite drink.
Keep in mind that there is no ‘best beer.’ People have different tastes, and it's a pleasure to find out what they like (BreweryFinder.ca, n.d.).
Tips for Enjoying Craft Beer
A few simple tips can help you enjoy every sip even more.
Drink It at the Right Temperature
Many people assume beer should always be ice cold, but some craft beers actually taste better when served slightly warmer. This allows more of the beer's natural aromas and flavours to come through (Bottleneck Management, n.d.).
Use a Glass
Pouring your beer into a clean glass instead of drinking directly from the can or bottle enhances both the aroma and the overall tasting experience. The aroma plays a big role in how we experience flavour (Bottleneck Management, n.d.).
Slow Down
Craft beer is meant to be enjoyed, not rushed. Take a moment to notice the colour, smell the aroma, and enjoy the different flavours as you sip. You may discover subtle notes that you would otherwise miss (Bottleneck Management, n.d.).
Pairing Beer with Food
Craft beer becomes even more enjoyable when paired with the right food. You don't need to be a chef to create great combinations.
Here are a few easy pairings to try:
Lager: Grilled chicken, seafood, and salads
Pale Ale: Burgers, pizza, and barbecue
IPA: Spicy foods like tacos, wings, or curries
Wheat Beer: Pasta, seafood, and light appetizers
Stout: Chocolate desserts or smoked meats
Experimenting with different pairings is one of the best ways to discover new flavours and make every meal a little more memorable (Beerliever, 2025).
Don't Be Afraid to Explore
One of the best parts of the craft beer community is how welcoming it is. If you're visiting a brewery, please ask the staff for recommendations. Tell them what drinks or flavours you normally enjoy, and they'll point you toward something you'll likely love.
Ordering a tasting flight is another great option. It allows you to sample several different beers without committing to a full glass, making it an enjoyable way to explore new styles.
Cheers to New Discoveries
Craft beer is more than a drink—it's a creative, quality, and community experience. Each brewery tells its own tale, each beer its own story, and each tasting is an adventure in the unknown.
We love to bring people into the craft beer scene and to share in the friendships and communities that make every pint special at Triune Brew Co.
